CHICO, CA (3-9-10) -Â The annual Mini Gold Cup has been going on at the Silver Dollar Speedway since 1987 and has long been known as one of the most prestigious events in west coast sprint car racing. Originally starting out as a World of Outlaws Series event, throughout the years the Mini Gold Cup has also been held un-sanctioned and has also been run under the banner of the now defunct Northern Auto Racing Club.
From 2001 to 2008 the Mini Gold Cup was utilized as the season opener for the Golden State Challenge King of California Series, until being reverted back to a World of Outlaws event last season. This year the long running event is back to an un-sanctioned 410 sprint car show and will award a cool $8,000 to the winner of this Saturday night's 40-lap feature. Friday evening's preliminary main event will also pay a nice $6,000-to-win.
A number of top drivers and teams are expected to compete this weekend including 13-time GSC champ and four-time Mini Gold Cup winner Brent Kaeding of Campbell, two-time GSC titlist Jonathan Allard of Chico, former GSC champions Sean Becker of Oroville and Jason Statler of Grass Valley, defending GSC Rookie of the Year Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, current USAC National Midget point leader Brad Sweet of Grass Valley, reigning Silver Dollar Speedway 410 champion Bobby McMahan of Elk Grove, three-time USAC Silver Crown Series champ Bud Kaeding of Campbell, ASCS National Series rookie contender Kyle Hirst of Loomis and many more.
Gates will open at 5pm this Friday and Saturday with qualifying scheduled for around 6:30 and racing to follow. All seating will be general admission each night. The Silver Dollar Speedway is a high-banked quarter-mile clay oval and is located on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico, California. More info can be found at http://www.silverdollarspeedway.com
