Forsberg Wins Night One Silver Cup at Chico

Forsberg Wins Night One Silver Cup at Chico

CHICO, CA (3-8-13) - Auburn's Andy Forsberg notched his 104th career main event win Friday night during opening night of Silver Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway. "This was my kind of track tonight," said Forsberg. "For some reason I have always done well at Chico when it gets rough and fast." Forsberg was also pleased with the win because it was the first main event win for car owners Cody and Mandi Gainey. Forsberg tore up his family #92 at Marysville the weekend before and made a deal to drive the #7c car this weekend at Chico. After night one it looks like it was a good decision. "Usually it takes a night to get used to a car but we had this PT Shocks car a rolling tonight," said Forsberg.

Mitch Olson came in the second spot. Olson was a rocket ship the first part of the main event. He led the first 20 laps of the main event. It was the best he had looked at Chico. Olson battled with some slower traffic on lap 18 and 19. These cars were tough to pass and it's eventually what cost him the race lead. Chris Bell was relentless all night. The Oklahoma driver showed why his is a fast rising star in sprint car racing. At least four different times it looked as if he was going to flip over but somehow saved the car and continued racing. For his first visit to the Chico he put on quite a show for the fans while driving the Finley Farms #77. Bradley Terrell was the hard charger of the night. Terrell charged from his 17th starting spot to finish fourth. It was a great run for the young lion from Sebastopol. Sacramento's Justyn Cox rounded out the top five while driving for Harley Van Dyke's potent sprint car.

Shane Golobic flipped in turn four on lap 11. He was running 4th at the time. After the accident he did not continue. On lap 21 fourth place running Rico Abreu slammed the front grandstands wall a ton. He was uninjured but the car was junk. Willie Croft went up and over Mike Monahan right rear and flipped in turn four. Croft was in the top five before the accident.

Andy Gregg dominated the B main event. Heat races were won by Cole Wood, Mason Moore, Herman Klein and Bradley Terrell. Forsberg was the quickest in qualifying at 12.183. A total of 29 winged 360's entered night one of Silver Cup.

Nick DeCarlo won the rough and ragged IMCA dirt modified main event tonight. Five different leaders traded paint and pieces on the fast, hooked up and rough speedway. DeCarlo had an amazing night as he started in the 19th spot. Charging from that deep in the field is a big accomplishment. It was a race that soon will not be forgotten. Ryan McDaniel held on to the second spot. McDaniel battled the track and other competitors all race long. Kyle Casson came home in the third spot. Raymond Lindeman locked down the fourth spot. Fourteenth starting Jesse Bailey rounded out the top five. Only seven of the 20 cars that started the main event finished the race.

Jeff Olschowka started the main event as the leader. He led the first ten laps of the main event. On the eleventh lap it was hot shoe Kellen Chadwick's turn to pace the field. Chadwick lasted as the leader up until lap 13 when Olschowka grabbed the lead back. Three laps later on lap 16 it was local champion Richard Papenhausen's chance to show what he could do. Papenhausen parked it in turn four on the 21st lap that allowed DeCarlo to gain the lead. It was the most exciting race of the night. The rough track claimed a lot of victims; however, it provided the fans with plenty of entertainment.

Olschowka started the night off by turning the fastest lap in group qualifying for the dirt modifieds. Olschowka turned a 16.806. Randy McDaniel won the first heat race while his son Ryan captured the second race win. Oreste Gonella won the third and final heat race of the night.

Austin Liggett made some new fans at Chico tonight. The young driver showed why he has a lot of potential as he won the 20 lap wingless sprint car main event. Liggett held off David Johnson and Scott Hall to capture the first night of Silver Cup. Colton Slack was all over Liggett in the early part of the race. For one brief moment on lap 17, Slack actually took the lead. On the next lap Slack got on two wheels through turns one and two. The situation caused Slacks car to develop a left front flat tire and he pulled into the infield. Liggett got the lead back and never relinquished the top spot. Rowdy McClenon finished in the fourth spot while Jimmy Christian rounded out the top five. A total of 14 cars entered the first night. Twelve of them started the main event. David Johnson turned the fastest lap in qualifying with a 13.635. Angelique Bell and Slack each won their heat races tonight. Tomorrow's race will serve as the first Joe Hunt Magneto's Wingless Sprint Shootout points show for 2013..
