9th Annual Bill Brownell Memorial This Friday

9th Annual Bill Brownell Memorial This Friday

CHICO, CA (5-9-16) - Motorcycle pioneer and auto racing enthusiast Bill Brownell was a fixture at Silver Dollar Speedway. Brownell was one of the founding fathers of Cycleland Speedway and spent his entire life involved in either racing on two wheels or supporting drivers on four wheels. His love for motorcycles, outlaw karts and sprint cars was infectious. Even though he is no longer with us, this Friday night, along with Shane Scott, the Silver Dollar Speedway is proud to host the 9th Annual Bill Brownell Memorial.

Friday night general admission is $14.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors and juniors. Children ages 6 - 11 are $6.00 while kids five and under are free. Pit gate opens at 4 PM with the front gate opening at 6 PM. Winged sprint car qualifying is scheduled for 6:30 PM.

With extra money from Scott, the 25-lap 410 sprint car main event win will pay $2500. The extra money and favorable weather forecast should attract numerous sprint car teams eager to race. Two rain outs have caused havoc in his year's 410 sprint car championship. Drivers and teams are ready to get some racing in at the Speedway. On a side note, there has not been a repeat winner in the eight previous Brownell Memorial races.

Former Winners of the Bill Brownell Memorial; 2008 - Mason Moore, 2009 - Kyle Hirst, 2010 - Sean Becker, 2011 - Dan Menne, 2012 - Tyler Wolf, 2013 - Willie Croft, 2014 - Keith Bloom Jr., 2015 - Rico Abreu.

Four other divisions will join the winged sprint cars including the IMCA Sport Mods, Vintage Hardtops, economy sprints and wingless sprints.

The sport mods will make their third appearance of the season. With his one win, Brian Cooper leads his brother Todd Cooper by one point. Jerry Bartlett has two top five main event finishes and sits in the third spot. Fred Ryland has the other feature win and sits fourth in points. Mike Merritt holds down the fifth spot.

Orland's Tony Richards will look to repeat as the wingless sprint cart main event winner. Richards was able to hold off Terry Schank Jr. and get the win on the Saturday night of the Bradway Memorial. Even with the loss, Schank has won three of the four point races and holds a staggering 18-point edge over second place driver Angelique Bell. Barry Pries Jr. has been a new bright spot in our division and is only three points behind Bell for second. Brent Steck has earned two top five finishes in four starts to place him fourth in the points.

Wyatt Brown leads the economy sprints into their second night of championship auto racing. Brown won the first main event and holds a three point edge over Ron Wyman.

The Vintage Hardtops make their first trip to the speedway in 2016. This traveling group of drivers showcases what racing was like in the "good ole days".
