Michael Kofoid Continues to Emerge as Rising Star

CHICO, CA (7-22-17) - Penngrove's Michael Kofoid electrified a near capacity crowd of 2,000 fans by winning the 25-lap 360 sprint car main event Friday night. With the triumph, the fifteen-year-old now becomes the youngest driver to win a winged 360 sprint car race in the history of the Silver Dollar Speedway. "It feels good to get a win here," said Kofoid. "I want to thank all these fans who came out tonight and I hope it was a good show."

The only hiccup for Kofoid occurred on lap six when hard charging Michael Ing was able drive around him for the lead as the two engaged with slower traffic. Unfortunately for Ing, before the next lap was completed, a red flag was displayed for Michael Keen who flipped down the front stretch wall. This allowed Kofoid to resume as the leader when the lap six restart occurred.

As the race resumed it was evident that Kofoid was the driver to beat. Ing did his best to stay within striking distance but was never able to get closed back up like he was on lap six. Chase Majdic enjoyed another solid run tonight. He battled with Andy Forsberg for most of the night. Majdic held on to finish third. Forsberg came home fourth. Sean Becker started deep in the field and came up to finish in fifth. Not to be outdone by the top five was Brad Bumgarner. Tonight, Bumgarner qualified well and was competitive throughout the night. Bumgarner held off Becker for a good portion of the race only to surrender the fifth spot late in the race. Bumgarner finished sixth.

Forsberg won the first heat race. Kirt Organ held off Steven Tiner to win the second heat race. Majdic won the third eight lap heat race. Kofoid started off the night by turning the fastest lap in qualifying at an 11.984. He was the only driver in the sub 12.000 second bracket.

Cameron Haney dominated the seven-car winged economy main event. The only driver able to stick with him was Wyatt Brown. The top two in the main event traded spots in the heat race as Brown got the win. Point leader Mike Ficklin brought his car home in third spot.

Chico's Phil Marino won his 60th career street stock main event tonight. Marino also won the heat race. Only five cars turned out for the race. Gary Newman held off Danny Dozier for second. Clinton Earl finished second in the heat race. With the win, Marino now has won four main events this season.

Nick Vidovich continued his winning ways during the Earl's Plumbing Hobby Stock main event. Vidovich won the main event on July 4th and backed up that win with another tonight. Point leader Kyle Allen did his best to keep up with Vidovich, but also had to race around James West for second. West and Allen battled for the second spot over half of the race. Colin Ferguson was credited with a third-place finish. West came across the line in fourth. Shannon Collins finished in the fifth spot.

George Nielson won the 600's feature event. Nick Robfogle made a last lap charge but was not able to pass Nielson. Justin Stretch finished third. Rick Gutzke wrecked hard in turn four. There seemed to be some concern for Gutzke as he was dazed but ultimately walked away from the wreck under his own power. Robfogle won the lone heat race for the night.
