Forsberg Wins on Kid Bike Night at Chico

Chico, CA (August 3, 2018) …. Forty-two-year-old Andy Forsberg won his 54th career sprint car main event at Silver Dollar Speedway Friday night. It was his 11th win of 2018, and fourth during the Friday night point championship series. Forsberg went into the night two-points back of Mason Moore. After the 25-lap feature win, Forsberg leaves tonight with a three-point edge over Moore with one championship race to go on August 24th. Moore held his own tonight and finished the race in third.
Tonight’s hard charger was Tanner Thorson who started 10th. Thorson was a man on a mission. The team missed qualifying while changing a motor. At the start of the main event, Thorson seemed to pass one car per lap. By lap 10, he motored by R.C. Smith for second. Forsberg was up front and dealing with heavy slower traffic. This allowed Thorson to close in. Things got real on lap 19 when Thorson closed to within a car length of Forsberg. The next lap, Thorson passed Forsberg going into turn three. Forsberg checked up, allowed Thorson to drift up while Forsberg drove back through the middle of the track and took the lead back. It was one of the best moves of the season. After the battle for the lead, Forsberg checked out a bit and took the white flag as the leader. About half way through the final lap, Kalib Henry hit the wall in turn four and flipped. This brought out the red flag and the race was halted. Henry crawled out the car but was visibly shaken and seemed to have an arm injury.
This set up a two-lap dash to the finish. Forsberg nailed the single file restart and charged out to a three-car length advantage. Forsberg led the final lap with ease. Thorson finished second. Moore was third. R.C. Smith deserves a ton of credit tonight. He raced with the leaders all night. An impressive run considering Smith has limited starts this year. To me, a fourth-place finish is as good as a win for Smith and he should be proud. Cody Lamar started 12th and raced up to a fifth-place finish.
Quick time in the sprint cars went to Forsberg. On his second lap he registered an 11.689. It was his 48th career fast time at Silver Dollar Speedway.
Kyle Allen has entered four Earl’s Plumbing Hobby Stock main events in 2018. After tonight, he has now won all four he has entered. Allen took the lead away from Jim Brookshire on lap five and held off a charging Colin Ferguson to get the win. The feature main event was on fire, literally, because on lap 15 Shannon Collins car erupted into a big ball of flames. Collins brought the car to a stop in turn one and safety crew were able to help put the fire out. Collins emerged uninjured. Ferguson couldn’t catch Allen the final five laps and ended up finishing second. Jeremy Langenderfer finished in the third spot. Jim Brookshire rebounded for a fourth-place finish. James West, spun during the event, also regrouped to finish in fifth.
Brian Cooper took the lead away from Mike Ficklin on lap seven and went on to win his fourth feature of the season at Chico. A solid 15 cars turned out for the IMCA Sport Mod feature event. Phil Marino moved into the second spot and shadowed Cooper the remaining 14 laps. Jake Van Tol was solid all night. Making a rare start at Chico, Van Tol charged from his seventh starting spot and ran up to third on the eighth lap. The top three, Cooper, Marino and Van Tol were all turning nearly the same lap times which provided good close racing. Lap 10 saw Sean Hulsey spin with Jesse Skidmore in turn two. The restart proved to be no problem for Cooper who continued as the leader. With two laps to go Matt Micheli got by Van Tol for third. Tyler Rodgers was also able to pass Van Tol. Rodgers would finish in the fourth spot.
Street stock driver Brent Lawrence picked up his first win of 2018 at Chico. It was his second career win, his first back in 2016. Lawrence led all 20-laps to get the win. Lawrence did a good job holding off Travis Moore for the final 18 laps. Clinton Earl charged from his eighth starting spot and took over the third position when Corey Hall dropped out of the race on lap 12. Ken Micheli came from his tenth starting spot to finish fourth. Leif Berglund was able to get a top five finish.
